Description

This is a small, two-story stone-built former teacher’s residence, located on Rallagh Road in Dungiven, County Londonderry. The building dates from around 1860 to 1879, although historical records suggest a school and residence may have existed on the site since approximately 1820. The house originally served the now-demolished Rallagh School, which has been replaced by a simple church hall on the same site.

The front elevation is three bays wide and is faced with random rubble sandstone, with red brick detailing around the windows. A modern, projecting gabled entrance porch, built from red brick to sill level, has been added, detracting from the original appearance. A single, eight-pane vertical hardwood window is located on either side of the porch. Above the porch, a small central gable contains two six-pane vertical windows. Decorative wooden bargeboards and exposed rafter feet are visible on the gable and flat eaves. Modern PVC gutters and downpipes are present. The gable and rear walls are roughcast rendered, and there is a single-story return at the rear. The roof is slated with Bangor blue slates and red ridge tiles. Modern windows are found in the gable and rear elevations. A 2-meter-high stone wall formerly separated the house yard from the school yard.

Historical sources, including the Ordnance Survey Memoirs, initially describe a school building of stone and lime with a slated roof. Later accounts, such as those by John McCloskey, describe a "Lancasterian School" built by subscription, and a "comfortable house" containing classrooms and living quarters for the teacher. Mr. T. Glenn was the last principal teacher, serving for 12 years before the school closed in 1961 and was subsequently converted into a church hall. The current occupant undertook renovations in 1992, significantly changing the character of the house. The property remains in the ownership of the Church of Ireland.
