Description
This is a late 18th century farmworker's cottage with a barn attached, situated on Glenshane Road, Feeny, Co Londonderry. The building has important group value with Ashpark House (listed reference HB02/05/005A).
The building is a 1½-storey, 8-bay long structure extending from Ashpark House and comprising a cottage and associated outbuildings, all with a slate roof and gabled design. The principal, north-east facing elevation overlooks and forms one side of the farmyard. The first five bays form the cottage, which features a low, square-headed, timber-sheeted door and, on each side, two 12-pane horizontally sliding sash windows with three panes in height. Above three of the ground floor windows, and under the eaves, are horizontally sliding windows with eight panes and two in height. Painted sandstone cills are present, with harled and painted walls and a painted plinth. The outbuilding, continuing in line with the cottage, has a single square-headed, sheeted, wood door, and four-pane sliding sash windows on each side, with the sash box exposed. Above these windows are two louvred square openings. The outbuilding's walls are harled and painted, without a plinth. The building has PVC ½ round guttering, downpipes, and a soilpipe. The long roof is slated with a clay ridge and incorporates two chimneys – one small and another, closer to Ashpark House, large, serving the kitchen. The rear wall has four window openings, with harled walls. A gable wall exhibits random rubble stonework, unplastered, with a high-level sheeted wood door and a louvred square opening on each side. The surrounding farmyard includes other farm buildings in varying states of disrepair.
The cottage and outbuilding appear to be contemporary with Ashpark House, dating back to the late 18th century. Originally a farmworker’s residence, it is currently a private home. Historical documentation includes an Ordnance Survey Map from 1830, the Ordnance Survey Memoirs of Ireland from 1833-34 and 1838, and information from an occupying tenant in 2000.
