Description
This is a former mill, likely constructed between 1780 and 1799. Originally a beetling mill, it was later adapted for corn milling. The mill is situated near Knockan, County Londonderry, alongside the Owenbeg River, which provided its water source.
The stone-built mill is two storeys high. Approached via a raised laneway, its front elevation has three bays, featuring a single timber door, a boarded-up window opening, and a built-up window. Two steps lead to the main entrance. The walls are finished with roughcast rendering, and there is a corbel course at gutter level, though a gutter is absent. The roof is covered in natural blue slate. The west gable has a small square opening near the base of the wall, while the other gable has a door near the corner providing access to the floor underneath. A door is present on the rear wall, leading to the lower floor, and two openings at upper floor level have been built up. An adjacent building abutted the gable projecting toward the millrace and likely housed the water wheel. The mill is located a short distance from Knockan bridge and a field’s length from the old Feeny Road. A dry mill pond is situated alongside the access laneway, and the remains of the sluice and the dried-up millrace are still visible.
An Ordnance Survey map from 1830 originally depicted the site as a beetling mill, and a revision of the same map in 1905 indicated it had been converted to a corn mill. The site is of industrial archaeological interest.
