Poston’s Mill, Altinure Road, Gallany, Dungiven, Co Londonderry

The remains of Poston’s Mill stand as ruins of a late 18th-century mill building, situated on Altinure Road in Gallany, near Dungiven, County Londonderry. The site’s historical significance extends beyond its original function, due to the installation of an electric generator and turbine by James Poston in the 1930s. Poston, a graduate of Queen's University Belfast, supplied electricity to the local community, including Feeny village, from 1932 until the 1940s when the Northern Ireland Electricity Board assumed responsibility for electricity generation.

The mill itself is a ruinous stone structure, forming an L-shaped building that is part of a larger complex referenced in HB02/05/021A. The site is now overgrown, making detailed architectural assessment difficult. An 1830 Ordnance Survey map identifies a corn mill at this location, complete with a mill race. Ordnance Survey Memoirs from 1833-38 refer to multiple mills within the townland of Gallany, including both grain and flax mills. The industrial archaeological interest lies primarily in the turbine and generator installation, which provided local electricity. The mill is privately owned.
