Description

This is an early twentieth century cast-iron post box of King George V design, located on the pavement outside 789 Lisburn Road. Constructed between 1910 and 1936, it is painted ‘pillar box red’ overall, with a black base and carries the maker's name – ‘MCDOWALL STEVEN & CO LTD LONDON & GLASGOW’. The post box stands 5 feet 0 inches high and measures 21 inches in diameter at the cap, 15½ inches at the shaft, and 17 inches at the base.

The box features a shallow, fluted oversailing cap, below which is a door hinged on the left side, with a raised cup handle on the right and a lock keyhole above. A hooded rectangular aperture at the top of the door allows letters to be inserted. Above the aperture is a small holder for a removable plate indicating the day of the next collection, accompanied by the words ‘NEXT COLLECTION’ in raised lettering. Below this is a notice plate holder displaying collection days/times and the box's identifying number (BT9 234D). A ‘GR’ cipher, featuring a raised crown and the words ‘POST OFFICE’ below, is located below the notice plate holder.

The post box originally stood further along Lisburn Road, near the junction of Lislea Drive but was moved to its current location sometime between 1966 and 1988, in front of the then-local post office. It is not considered for listing due to this relocation. Post boxes of this era were of significant social importance as the primary means of communication.
