Description

This is a late Victorian three-storey building, constructed around 1885 in red brick. It features a curved return into Lower Garfield Street, a corner turret, tall slender chimneys, and irregularly spaced gable dormers. The main ground floor retains a well-preserved pub frontage, displaying the monogram "JD" (for John Donnelly, who founded The Deer’s Head pub following the development of Garfield Street around 1885) on a red sandstone escutcheon. Door heads are decorated with drapes and vines below scrolled broken pediments. A stone balcony is present on three corbels at the corner of the second floor, while plain sash windows are found throughout. Small arches break through the parapet to facilitate rainwater drainage. While of some local interest, the building is not considered among the finest examples of its type and has not been subjected to a full survey. The building is not listed, and neither its architectural nor historical interest is formally recognised.
