Description
Island House is a two-storey house on Derrylee Road at Maghery, near Portadown. It was completed in 1868 or 1869, when it first appears in the valuation book. The building was constructed by Thomas Wilford on a lease held from the Charlemont estate on previously undeveloped ground. The identity of any architect is not known. It stands a few metres southwest of an earlier pair of small vernacular dwellings pre-dating 1835, one of which remained occupied until the mid-1890s.
The exterior retains a slate roof and timber sliding sash windows and timber doors, and is generally in good repair apart from a missing portion of slates which allows water ingress. Extensive rendering work has been carried out to the interior, making the building unsuitable for listing consideration.
In 1901 the house contained 13 rooms and was noted as a first-class dwelling. By 1905 it was named Island House and advertised as containing three reception rooms, four bedrooms, a large hall, two pantries, kitchen and scullery. Thomas Wilford, the original builder, died in October 1880 at the age of 70. The property was subsequently let to Robert Gilpin until around 1886, when John Kerr McKelvey became the occupant. McKelvey, appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1898, lived here as a magistrate and farmer with his wife Sarah and five children. Following McKelvey's death before 1906, Archibald Smith leased the property from 1909 and acquired the freehold in 1912. In or just before 1917 Robert Hume came into possession, and by 1924 had let it to former occupant Sarah McKelvey. After her death around 1932 the lease passed to her youngest daughter Ruby. John Hume is recorded as owner and occupant from 1963 until his death around 1983. The building is believed to remain with his relations but appears to have been vacant since at least 2018.
