Description
This early 19th-century farmhouse and its attendant buildings form a remarkably well-preserved complex dating to between 1820 and 1839. The main dwelling is a three-structural-bay house with lobby entry, harled and whitened, covered with thatch. It faces north-east and sits gable-ended to a small road leading from the secondary road that runs eastwards alongside the M1 Motorway. Two outbuildings are attached: a thatched barn to the north-west and a corrugated metal-roofed barn to the south-west. The layout of the original house and outbuildings remains virtually unaltered, with most detail intact. The mud-walled construction and roof structures are of considerable interest, and the positioning of all buildings conveys an excellent impression of an early 19th-century farm complex.
The walls are constructed of mud with an applied white finish. The thatch on the main dwelling and the adjoining north-west outbuilding is finished with a cement fillet at its junction with the corrugated iron-roofed structure to the south-east, and cement skews at the north-west termination. Red brick chimneystacks with concrete cappings serve the kitchen hearth and a fireplace in the parlour to the left (south-east).
The entrance is protected by a curved-sided windbreak porch, over which the thatch dips. To the left of the porch are four vertically sliding sash windows, each divided into two lights vertically. These windows have horns, exposed frames, and traditional-depth sills. The openings are unequally spaced, with those lighting the parlour positioned close together. Beyond the entrance to the right are storerooms accessed via a timber-sheeted door followed by a timber-sheeted stable door. At the end of the elevation stands a further store with a recessed front wall and corrugated iron roof, entered through a timber-sheeted stable door. The rear elevation contains one top-hung window, three further window openings (two with sashes), and a timber-sheeted door providing access to the second outbuilding. A flat-roofed kitchen extension, whitened to match the main house, has modern windows and rear door.
Cartographic evidence shows a building on this site on the Ordnance Survey map of 1834–35, separate from the outbuilding line, though it is not noted in the contemporary valuation. By the revised 1860 map, it appears as part of a long line with the outbuildings. The valuation references of circa 1862 are unclear, making it difficult to determine whether this was the house occupied by John Wilson (with David Wilson as immediate lessor, rated at 5/-) or by William Smith (with William Wilson as immediate lessor, rated at 10/-).
The building has undergone systematic conservation work: thatch repairs were carried out in 1977 and 1979 by James J. Gray of Portadown, and in 1980, 1981, and 1982 by Andrew Walker of Castletown, Omagh. Window frames were replaced in 1983 by County Joinery Works Ltd of Portadown, with further thatch work undertaken by Trevor Agnew of Quay House, Moira, using wheat straw. Additional roof work was completed in 1991 using flax, with further schemes in 2000 also using flax supplied by Gerry Agnew.
