Description

25 Greenisland Road, Portadown

A single storey dwelling with corrugated iron roof, constructed in mud with a dash finish. Evidence suggests thatch formerly existed beneath the corrugated covering. A barn is attached to the northwest gable, and a modern annex with cavity wall construction has been added to the northeast (rear).

The main structure appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1834, matching the footprint of the current front section, though not recorded in the contemporary first valuation. By the second valuation of 1862, the building had been divided into two properties: the northwest section occupied by William Doran and the southeast by Mary Hennan, both leased from Thomas Atkinson and rated at 10 shillings each. By 1890 both properties were in William Doran's hands, and by 1897 the valuers described the whole as a "house and office" (outbuilding), suggesting alterations around that period.

The 1901 census recorded the dwelling as a second-class mud-walled, thatched building with five windows across the front and three rooms inside. It was occupied by William Doran, an 81-year-old widowed farmer, along with his son John, daughter-in-law Mary, and their seven children. By the 1911 census, the house was recorded as rubble or brick-walled with four windows to the front—the arrangement visible today. This indicates significant alterations in the decade after 1901, including patching or rebuilding of part of the frontage and possibly application of the present render, though much of the original mud-walling appears to remain. The brick infill on the northwest gable may also date from this period. The corrugated iron roof covering is later, as it does not appear in the 1911 description.

John Doran remained householder until at least 1929. Ownership then passed to Patrick Lappin in 1935, Rose Lappin in 1938, and Mary A. Lappin in 1965, who still occupied it in 1972. The house is believed to have been occupied until 2005.

Windows have been largely replaced, and few original interior features remain. The building has been significantly altered with insufficient original material remaining to merit listing.
