Description
A single-storey thatched house at Derryall, near Portadown, built between 1835 and 1860. It faces east and comprises four structural bays with a lobby entry. The walls are harled and whitened, and the roof is thatched between raised gables. A block cut ridge has been applied to the front elevation, which detracts from the historic appearance. The house stands on an isolated plot behind a picket fence, set back from a secondary road that runs parallel to the M1 Motorway and is visible from it. A renovated outbuilding and a perpendicular thatched barn with similar characteristics stand nearby.
The south gable, which faces the road, features a corbelled chimneystack with one pot serving the main hearth; a second similar stack without a pot serves the kitchen. The gable contains no window openings. The front entrance consists of a timber sheeted half door within a shallow windbreak porch roofed by an extension of the thatch. To the left of the porch are two windows; to the right are three. These are vertically sliding sashes divided into two panes vertically, with small sash stops, though the sill depths are inconsistent at their leading faces. The rear elevation contains five windows of varying sizes, including one with the upper sash divided horizontally and lower sash as a single pane, one with small panes above a large plain sash, and others of similar front design. A projection with doorway stands between the fourth and fifth openings. A northern extension, set back at the front but projecting slightly at the rear, is roofed with corrugated iron and has large double timber sheeted doors now non-functional. The attached outbuilding, set at right angles after flat iron gates hung on large square pillars, is thatched simply between raised gables with whitened plaster walls and a sheeted entrance door facing south.
The property is first recorded on the revised Ordnance Survey map of 1860. The 1862 valuation records the occupant as James Litter, with Dawson Tate as immediate lessor, and a rateable value of 10 shillings. The outbuilding was added to the site subsequently. The roof has undergone numerous repairs: thatching work in 1982 and 1983 was undertaken by R. Stevenson of Yew Cottage, Dungannon, using straw. Further work followed in 1985, with Gerald Agnew responsible for a scheme in 1987 using straw and further work in 1991. George Topping, thatcher, acquired the property and completed a scheme in 1993. In 1997 Master Thatchers quoted for work involving combed reed. The roof was last worked upon in June 2003 by Gerry Agnew using wheat straw for repairs. The block cut ridge was applied by Mr Topping and is inconsistent with the historical style of thatch used on the building.
The house survives as a picturesque and rare local example of a once common vernacular type, of interest for its style, proportion, detail, surviving historic plan form, historic roof structure, and interior character.
