Description
These outbuildings consist of two single-storey units located a short distance from the main house. Originally built between 1820 and 1839, they were depicted on the 1834-35 Ordnance Survey map and again in a revised form on the 1862 Ordnance Survey map, which shows a reduction in length corresponding to the present layout. It is believed a bay may have been removed to provide access to the surrounding fields. The buildings are constructed with mud walling, similar to the main house, and originally had thatched roofs. Evidence of this traditional construction remains, with roof structures that do not rely on scraws and scallops to secure the thatch. A corrugated iron roof now covers the remains of the thatch, with metal rainwater goods, drive-in hooks for the front gutter, and a plastic gutter at the rear. The front and side walls are roughcast, with plain bases, while the rear walls are plastered, with the plaster detached in places to reveal underlying stone and mud construction. The stable has a single timber ledged and sheeted door extending to three-quarter height, while the byre has full-height double doors of similar construction; a rear door to the byre is finished with galvanised steel sheeting. The buildings form part of a farmyard, enclosing the yard on the north-west side and formerly operated as a stable and byre, now used as a store. The main house, dating back to around 1720 (as determined by dendrochronology), is situated near the Diamond crossroads, the site of the 1795 battle leading to the founding of the Orange Order.
