Old Brewery, 25 Castlewellan Road, BANBRIDGE, Co Down, BT32 4AX

This was a three-storey former nineteenth century brewery built of rubble stone with brick dressings, situated on Castlewellan Road, Banbridge. The building was demolished to allow for the construction of a supermarket. The First Survey card details that in 1840, the brewery consisted of slate-roofed buildings with Blackstone walls and brick dressings. Two pediments faced the main façade, the central one featuring a brick lozenge inset. Dressed quoins marked the corners. The buildings, approximately 30 feet wide, were arranged around a courtyard measuring 153 feet by 117 feet, and incorporated a dwelling house. Initially built by Johnstons of Lurgan as a brewery, the building was later converted to a bleach works by Malcomsons, and subsequently used as a military depot, a shoe factory, and a poultry farm. The south side of the brewery had been demolished by 1969. Dr. Crowe's "Industrial Archaeology of Co Down" and E.R.R. Green’s notes from a visit on 15th September 1969, are also recorded. The building was considered to be in poor condition at the time of the survey. This is a partial survey only, and the building has no architectural or historical interest for listing purposes.
