Description
This is a four-arch road bridge, likely built in the late 18th century, carrying the Kilmore Hill Road over a stream. It is constructed of rubble and features four small, roughly semicircular arches. A buttress supports the north end of the west face, with a pipe affixed to it via metal brackets and supported on the piers between the arches, which slightly project. The parapets have been updated with concrete coping, and the stonework has been re-pointed using cement. The bridge is located approximately 1.4 kilometers southwest of Aghagallon, and its eastern side is now largely visible only from the garden of a nearby house.
Historically, the bridge was situated along the original main route northwards from Lurgan, later superseded in the late 1800s by the Cornakinnegar Road. Taylor and Skinner’s map of 1776-77 depicts a road crossing a stream in this area, although the map’s scale makes precise identification difficult. The bridge’s rubble construction and arch design suggest a likely date of the 18th or very early 19th century, and it is probably the same structure shown on the 1832 Ordnance Survey map, and subsequently labelled ‘Kilmore Bridge’ on later Ordnance Survey maps from 1858 onwards. The bridge exhibits industrial archaeological interest.
