Description

15 Lurgan Road, Killough, Aghalee

A detached three-bay one and a half storey rendered house, built around 1900, possibly on the site of or incorporating fabric from an earlier dwelling. The building is rectangular on plan, facing south, with a single-storey rendered extension to the rear.

The house sits on the north side of Lurgan Road close to the village of Aghalee, within its own modest plot enclosed by hedgerow, with a short gravel drive leading to the property. The plot extends northwards along the road.

The pitched roof is covered in natural slate with clay ridge tiles and has a pair of redbrick chimney stacks positioned at either gable end. Cast-iron guttering on iron brackets runs along the rendered eaves course, with cast-iron downpipes. The walling is painted smooth render to the front elevation with a projecting plinth course, while the remaining elevations are finished in rough-cast render.

The asymmetrical front elevation contains three window openings across its width, with an off-centre square-headed door opening. All openings have lugged smooth render surrounds. The windows are timber sash with exposed sash boxes, horizontally-glazed 2/2 configuration, and painted concrete sills. The door is a replacement timber glazed example opening onto the gravel drive.

The west gable has randomly-placed square-headed window openings to each floor, with smooth render surrounds and timber casement windows. The north gable contains a pair of square-headed window openings to the upper floor with timber casement windows.

The rear elevation is abutted by a single-storey extension to the south, featuring a shallow pitched corrugated asbestos roof and steel casement window. A rendered shed with single-pitched corrugated iron roof and sheeted timber door abuts the north end.

Historical evidence suggests the dwelling was constructed around 1900 on the site of an earlier property. An earlier dwelling appears on the 1832 Ordnance Survey map for the townland of Killough in Aghalee Parish, depicted as a small oblong building situated on the modern Lurgan Road between Aghagallon Bridge to the west and the local constabulary barracks to the east, positioned across the road from a local graveyard (now built over). The property layout remained unchanged across subsequent Ordnance Survey editions from 1858 to 1921. The house does not appear specifically in Griffith's Valuation of 1859, which records nine small properties in the area, all let by James Turtle and valued between five shillings and one pound ten shillings. The 1965 Ordnance Survey map shows no discernible alteration to the building or surrounding area, although modern dwellings have since been constructed nearby.

The cottage remains occupied and is in good condition, retaining its original external appearance and some original interior detailing.
