Description
A two-storey gabled house built in 1794 by John Colville, a wheelwright employed by the Mount Stewart estate, located on Tullynagardy Road approximately one mile north of Newtownards. According to family tradition, Colville was granted the land by Robert Stewart, Lord Londonderry, on condition that he construct a habitable dwelling within six months, which he accomplished with this building. The house represents a good example of modest late eighteenth-century vernacular domestic architecture.
The south-facing front facade features a recent panelled and glazed timber door, with two windows to its left and one to its right on the ground floor, and three evenly spaced but slightly smaller windows on the first floor. The window frames match the appearance of original sash frames with Georgian-style panes but are in fact modern installations with top-hung upper openers. A single-storey lean-to structure with a small modern window is attached to the east gable. The rear, north-facing facade includes an L-shaped lean-to on the left side, fitted with a timber-sheeted door and modern window frame on the north elevation, a timber and glazed door on its east-facing side, and a window matching the front style on the north elevation with a modern window to the west facade. Above the lean-to, the main house features a broad first-floor window with six Georgian-style panes, alongside an intermediate stairwell window and a first-floor window with a narrower corresponding ground-floor window. The west gable is blank but adjoins a gabled outbuilding with a small flat-roofed shed occupying the gap between them. The entire facade is rendered and lined. The pitched roof is covered with Bangor blue slates and decorative clay ridge tiles, with stone parapets and two rendered chimney stacks. The rear lean-to roof is partly clad in asbestos slates, with a small chimney stack attached to its north side and the east gable. Modern PVC rainwater goods are fitted throughout. A curved rendered wall extends from the rear lean-to along the roadside, with rounded rendered gate posts flanking the pedestrian gate on the south side; these posts may be older than the main structure. A small plaque above the front door states the house was built by "John Colville, Wheelwright, 1794"; this plaque was added around 1900 but may have replaced an earlier one.
The east and rear lean-to sections are not original to the 1794 build but appear considerably old, probably dating from the mid to later nineteenth century. The original sash windows were replaced recently. Gabled outbuildings to the north and west are depicted on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map and may be contemporary with the house itself. The interior layout has been altered slightly, and internal detailing is partly modern and plain. The building sits directly on the roadside of the quiet Tullynagardy Road, with its east sides flush to the very narrow thoroughfare.
