Killysuggan old graveyard, Belfast Road, Milecross, Newtownards, Co Down, BT23

The graveyard, located on the Belfast Road, near Newtownards in County Down, dates primarily to the late 18th century, with headstones as early as 1781 and 1784. Evidence suggests earlier graves existed, though many headstones from that period have been lost or destroyed. The site is situated just north of the Belfast Road, roughly half a mile northwest of Newtownards, and is accessed via a pedestrian gate in a high sandstone wall facing a tree-lined drive leading to Milecross Lodge. Originally unenclosed and separated from the road by a ditch, the stone wall was erected around 1883.

The land was reportedly granted rent-free to local Catholics by Robert Bradshaw, owner of Milecross Lodge, around 1770. Later, an attempt was made to charge for burials, but this was contested in the High Court in Dublin, resulting in the restoration of free burial rights. Historical records indicate a medieval church, known as Kiltonga, was located in the area, and was ruined by the late 17th century. The graveyard may partially occupy the site of this earlier burial ground, although the original plots might correspond with a small, unmarked graveyard near a former Quaker meeting house across the Belfast Road. The graveyard appears to remain in use.
