Description

Strangford Lough Yacht Club is a two-storey yacht club house built in 1936 to designs by architect Philip Bell. It stands on the northern edge of a small headland on the western coast of Strangford Lough, within Whiterock Bay, over a mile west of Killinchy in County Down.

The building was constructed on the site of an earlier timber club house which burnt down in 1935, with building work necessarily taking place at low tide. The original structure was roughly rectangular in plan, finished in rough cast render with a rusticated concrete base and a flat roof. The International Style design was characterised by a distinctive cube-like form that originally appeared to rise dramatically from the sea, as the building was partly set on the edge of the headland and partly at a lower level.

The club has been substantially altered since its construction. Philip Bell later added a second storey to a curved bay on the east facade, and a large two-storey extension was subsequently added to the north end. The window openings have been altered at various points, with PVC frames installed in place of what were originally metal frames. The doors are also modern replacements.

The most significant change to the building's appearance and setting has been the reclamation of land to the north and east, carried out for dingy parks. This land reclamation has effectively "beached" the building, removing it from its original dramatic waterside context and substantially diminishing its architectural impact. The building's present L-shaped plan, combined with these various alterations, has rendered it considerably less striking than the original sturdy sea-borne cube form envisioned by Bell.

The building was demolished in late 1998 and replaced with an entirely new club house designed by Rachel Bevan.
