Description
This is a pair of mid-19th century terrace houses, likely dating between 1840 and 1859, that have been combined into a bank on the southeastern side of Main Street in Kircubbin. The front facade, facing southwest, shows alterations reflecting its current use. The main entrance is a timber panel door framed by simple, narrow, fluted pilasters and a slim moulding that extends over a large, modern mullioned window, which looks into the banking hall. A large laminated sign with a bank logo and PVC lettering sits above the window, with a smaller moulding above the sign. Narrow pilasters frame the large windows. The original door and window arrangement belonged to the house formerly numbered 76. To the left, house number 74 retains two sliding sash and case windows with simple moulded surrounds and keystones, the leftmost window featuring mirrored glass. A former entrance to number 74 is visible to the right, the moulded surround still present, but now blocked by an ATM, topped with a small arched canopy and a projecting bank sign.
The first floor features six sliding sash and case windows, each with a moulded keystone and a drop hood surround, linked by a string course with a semicircular arch incorporated into the string between the windows. A cill course runs along the base of the first-floor windows. The facade is finished with plain render and chamfered quoins. The gables are also rendered, and an eaves course is present. The roof is pitched and covered with Bangor blue slates, with thick clay tiles acting as parapets. There are four rendered chimney stacks and a cast iron gutter.
Buildings are shown on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map of the area. Number 76 was formerly a public house called "The Mermaid" before the bank took over the premises around 1918, a period when the windows and doors were likely decorated. Prior to that, number 74 served as the bank manager’s residence, in common with other branch locations.
