39 Stockbridge Road, Portavoe, Donaghadee, Co Down, BT21 0PN

This is a long, single-storey, vernacular house located on Stockbridge Road, approximately 1.5 miles northwest of Donaghadee, County Down. It was likely built between 1820 and 1839, and may have originally been two estate workers’ dwellings associated with nearby Portavo House. An Ordnance Survey map from 1834 shows a building with a matching plan, lean-tos, and position to the present building, suggesting it is the same structure.

The house is entered via a doorway in the centre of the south gable, which has a recent partly glazed door with a simple stone surround and keystone. To the east of the gable is a lean-to with a small window with a modern frame. The long east elevation has relatively small lean-tos at either end, with four unevenly spaced windows and a timber sheeted door between the third and fourth windows, all featuring modern frames. A section of the facade around the doorway and the fourth window has been patched with concrete brick. The north gable mirrors the south, but includes a stable door to the main doorway and a timber sheeted door on the north face of the north lean-to. A small attic window is located high in the gable. The west facade has three small, unevenly spaced windows with modern frames. The north, south, and west facades are finished in rough cast rendering while the east facade is mainly in rubble. The gabled roof is covered in pan tiles and has two relatively recent brick chimney stacks. The lean-tos have slate roofs, and the north lean-to has been raised slightly on concrete brick. The building was historically divided into two properties, occupied by James McGrath and Jane Small respectively, according to the valuation records of c.1861-3.
