Description
This is a simple, single-story schoolhouse, likely dating to around 1831, now used as a mission hall. It is situated on a slope to the north side of Hillhead Road, approximately one and a half miles north of Comber.
The building's external appearance suggests minimal alteration since its original construction. The south-facing front elevation features a centrally positioned gabled porch. The east side of the porch has a plain, timber-sheeted door. A sash window with Georgian panes is set into the gable side of the porch. Above the window, evidence suggests that letters were once raised or incised into the render, though this is now obscured due to chipping. To the left of the porch, there’s a similar window, and to the right are three further windows set at slightly differing levels. A timber notice board is positioned between the first and second windows on the right. The west gable is blank, while the east gable has a small lean-to, largely overgrown with greenery, with a doorway on its south face. Five windows are located at the rear, mirroring those on the front elevation, and all are covered with crude wire grills. The exterior is rendered and lined in places, with an eaves course running around the building. The roof is covered in natural slate, which has been tarred at some point. Rendered parapets feature on the gables, and there’s evidence of a second “parapet,” suggesting either a two-section roof construction or a building extension. Two rendered chimney stacks are also present. Metal rainwater goods are located on the front, but none on the rear.
Historical records indicate a building was present on this site on Ordnance Survey maps of 1834 and 1858, initially named "Knockmashen School House" and later "Ballystockart National School." The school is recorded in the 1837 Ordnance Survey memoirs as being managed by a Mr. Murphy, operating under the auspices of the National Board, established in 1831. It appears to have closed around the mid-20th century (approximately 1950-1960) and is now used as a mission hall.
