Description

This is a single-arch masonry bridge, built around 1855-1856, carrying a private road over a railway cutting. The bridge was designed by the important Irish architect Charles Lanyon. It is constructed of rock-faced squared basalt rubble with rusticated sandstone voussoirs forming the segmental arch. The spandrels and arch are slightly inset from the abutments and parapets on both faces, and the abutments have battered faces. The parapets are topped with sandstone copings, splayed outwards, and wrought iron railings with ornamented cast iron finials. Square end piers, regularly coursed in basalt, have moulded sandstone cornices and splayed caps. The bridge has a slightly humped-back form, and the interior vault is of red brick; the railway line has since been removed.

The bridge was built to carry a private driveway from the Shane's Castle estate to the main road, necessitated by the railway cutting that ran between the estate and the road. This railway line was an extension of the Randalstown branch of the Belfast and Ballymena Railway, planned in 1852 and built between 1853 and 1860. Charles Lanyon was engineer and architect for the railway company, and William Dargan was the contractor. The bridge is located just outside of Randalstown, set back from the main road and leading to a former gate lodge and gateway to the country house. The embankments on either side are heavily wooded, with particularly overgrown vegetation on the north side hindering access and views of that face. The bridge is of industrial archaeological interest and possesses notable architectural qualities relating to its style, proportions, ornamentation, structural system, setting, and group value, along with local and authorship (Lanyon) historical interest.
