Description
A two-storey terraced house and shop, built around 1790, located at the south end of a row of five houses on the east side of Main Street in Toome. The building forms part of the historic core of the village.
The house is built of roughcast render over a smooth-rendered plinth, with a pitched slate roof and rendered chimneystack. It faces west with a rectangular plan and rear extension to the east. The façade is four bays wide. The left bay contains a replacement square-headed timber door with single-pane overlight and no windows. The centre bay has two windows. The right bay has a single first-floor window and a modern shopfront at ground level. The west elevation features modern teak casements. The east elevation has replacement timber sliding sash windows (2/2) with horns and exposed boxes in smooth rendered surrounds with painted masonry sills. Half-round cast-iron gutters run along the eaves, which are timber boxed.
The property is abutted on the north by No. 30 Main Street and on the south by the three-storey No. 36 Main Street. The rear extension has a flat roof and is a single window wide; its south cheek abuts the identical extension of No. 30 Main Street. A modern shop linking block stands to the east, abutting a modern double-height storage block. Random rubble stone walling at the rear incorporates older material. A derelict single-storey outbuilding with pitched roof and rubble stone walls stands at the north end of the shop linking block. The rear boundary is defined by random rubble stone walls.
The interior has been largely modified with no original details remaining. The ground floor operates as a commercial unit with an apartment conversion above.
The Townland Valuation of 1836 records the building as the house and offices of Andrew Mann. The Ordnance Survey Memoir for 1836 notes that Toome then consisted of 26 buildings: 2 three-storey, 11 two-storey (including this one), and the remainder cottages. The proportions and style of this group of buildings suggest they date from around the same period as the market house (built 1786), forming a cohesive historic ensemble. The building appears on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1833 and appears enlarged by the second edition of 1857. According to the Memoir, local materials were used in construction: stone from nearby Carn rock, lime from Magherafelt, slates from Ballyronan and Belfast, and timber from Belfast.
The property has been remodelled and extended in recent years, particularly to the rear. The traditional characteristics of the façade remain and contribute to the architectural heritage of the area.
