Description

36 Gloverstown Road is a detached three-bay single-storey direct-entry vernacular house built around 1810, aligned east-west on the north side of Gloverstown Road. The house is rectangular on plan, facing south towards the elevated site, and sits parallel to the road.

The building retains many characteristic original features despite later nineteenth and early twentieth century alterations. The walls are lime-washed and lime-rendered (except the storm porch, which is painted smooth rendered), and the pitched roof carries three replacement brick chimneystacks. All windows are square-headed 2/2 sliding sashes in timber, unless otherwise stated, with contrasting painted smooth render bands and projecting stone cills on the principal south elevation. The replacement entrance door is varnished timber, and rainwater goods are half-round steel. The roof is currently pitched corrugated asbestos sheet.

The principal south-facing elevation has windows with painted smooth render bands and projecting stone cills. The west gable is completely abutted by a slightly lower outbuilding. The rear north elevation has windows with painted cills only, with the window to the west bay being a 1/2 sash. An offset lean-to extension at the rear features a timber sheeted door and side-hung timber casement windows without cills. The east gable is abutted by a lower single-bay outbuilding with pitched corrugated iron roof and rendered walling.

The west outbuilding was built around 1845 and has a pitched corrugated metal roof. Its south elevation has no openings except a single ventilation slit and a modern garage door with cement-rendered infill. The north elevation has timber sheeted entrance doors and two openings, one sheeted and one glazed, with an opening in the apex lighting a loft.

The house formerly had a thatched roof and was slated in the 1950s. The original layout remains largely intact, making it a well-maintained example of an increasingly rare building type and an important feature of the rural landscape.

The site includes a lime-washed boundary wall with segmental coping, accessed by a decorative wrought iron gate on pyramidal-capped square piers. An attached outbuilding, a potato shed, and the boundary wall are included in the listing. A concrete farmyard lies to the rear, with a modern bungalow sited to the northwest corner.

The house appears on the first Ordnance Survey map of 1833, though not valued in the first valuation. The attached east outbuilding is not shown on the 1833 edition but appears on the second edition of 1857. The west outbuilding was added later. Griffiths Valuation records show the house was occupied by the McErlain family, who continued to occupy it until the latter part of the twentieth century, when it was valued at £2 10s. The boundary wall, outbuilding, pump, and wrought iron gate significantly enhance the vernacular characteristics of the site.
