Description
Detached three-bay single-storey house of nineteenth century date, located south of Moneynick Road in Toomebridge. The building is a plainly detailed vernacular house that has undergone later nineteenth and twentieth century alterations, including a prominent canted bay addition.
The rectangular plan features a slightly higher return to the south east and an extended canted bay to the north elevation. Pitched roofs are slated with rendered chimneys to the gables and another positioned east of centre, each topped with replacement clay pots. The canted bay roof has a clay finial to its ridge tiles. The walls are ruled and lined render with simple corbelled eaves. Windows are timber top-hung casements with chamfered surrounds and painted masonry cills. Cast-iron half-round gutters form the rainwater goods.
The principal elevation faces north. The east bay contains three windows, the central bay is abutted by the canted bay, and the west bay has two windows. The canted bay itself has windows to its north cheeks and an entrance door to the west. The entrance door is timber panelled with a fanlight and side lights. The east gable has a single window to its north side and is abutted to the south by the return. The east elevation of the return contains a single window with two top openings. The south elevation has a single window at its east end. To the west side of the return is a kitchen extension with a low pitched roof and a chamfered south west corner, featuring a window to the east side and a replacement timber door to the centre. There is a window to the west side of the extension and to the exposed south wall. The west gable is blank.
The site is bounded to the road to the north by a hedge and alcoved entrance walls flanked by diamond caps, supported on mild steel gates. A hedge runs along the west and south boundaries, with a replacement fence to the south east corner. A modern blockwork shed stands to the south of the site. Windows and doors are currently blocked.
According to the second edition 1857 Ordnance Survey map, the building first appears as a rectangular block without the canted bay or rear extensions. The location on Moneynick Road, which was the turnpike road from Randalstown to Toomebridge operating a toll system, suggests the extended canted bay may indicate former use as a toll house, as this feature is typical of that building type. However, no evidence has been found to support this function, and the cartographic evidence indicates the bay is a later addition made after the toll system had been abolished. The building does not meet the statutory and policy tests as a building of special architectural or historic interest, having been compromised by later work.
