Description
A late 18th-century terraced two-storey three-bay house located on the east side of Main Street in Toomebridge. The building is of simple design and contributes to the historic character of the village.
The house is constructed of roughcast walls with a smooth rendered banded plinth at the base. The pitched roof is slated with timber eaves board and is topped by a roughcast chimney at the division between the left bays, which carries three chimney pots. The principal elevation faces west and consists of two windows to the ground floor and three diminished windows to the first floor. The northernmost bay is extended and contains the entrance door surmounted by a window.
The windows are timber sliding sash with 2/2 panes, featuring horns and exposed boxes, with smooth rendered surrounds and painted masonry cills. The replacement hardwood entrance door is surmounted by a rectangular fanlight and flanked by rectangular sidelights, each containing double-glazed patterned glass. These are set within a smooth rendered painted surround.
The east elevation is abutted to its south-east corner by a two-storey flat-roof extension that is shared with 32 Main Street. This elevation contains replacement timber casement windows to the ground floor and smaller timber casement windows with patterned glass to the first floor, each with concrete cills. The extension itself contains a rear timber-panelled entrance door on its north elevation with timber windows on the east elevation.
The site is bounded to the rear at north and south by random rubble stone walling. A derelict single-storey masonry pitched-roof outhouse stands to the east of the site, abutting the south wall and rear of No. 32. The building is abutted to the north by Toals bookmakers. Replacement cast metal half-round guttering and round downpipes serve as rainwater goods, with uPVC pipes to the rear.
The house is recorded on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1833 and appears enlarged by the 2nd edition map of 1857. According to the Townland Valuation of 1836, the building was the house and offices of Andrew Mann. The Ordnance Survey Memoir for the area records that in 1836 Toome consisted of 26 buildings: two three-storey, eleven two-storey (which includes this building), and the remainder cottages. The proportions and styles of the block of buildings in this terrace suggest they are of similar date, forming part of the historic core of Toome village, situated east of a quay recorded on the 1833 map. Materials were locally sourced: stone from nearby Carn rock, lime from Magherafelt, slates from Ballyronan and Belfast, and timber from Belfast.
