Whinstone Crag, Donegore Hill, Muckamore, Antrim, Co Antrim

Whinstone Crag is a 20th-century house built in a modern style, situated on Donegore Hill near Muckamore, County Antrim. Constructed in 1962 and extended in the early 1990s, the house is a conspicuous landmark in the landscape. The design initially featured a split-level arrangement on a sloping site, with a single-storey dwelling including a cantilevered section over a garage. Natural stone walling and dressings were used at garage level, while the rest of the walls were finished with white painted roughcast, and horizontally boarded timber fascias. The original layout resembled a ‘T’ shape, with a small porch in one corner, but a later addition has altered the building’s appearance.

The house is set on an eminence with expansive views of the surrounding countryside to the south, appearing alongside other prominent landmarks to the west of Donegore Parish Church. A winding driveway approaches from the north, marked by a modern gateway consisting of low rendered screen walls, piers, and steel gates. The building stands within a garden with informal lawns and rockery planting. A dense, foliated screen along the front boundary largely obscures the house from the public road. The architect was William McVeigh.
