Description
The outbuildings at Moat House comprise a range of 19th-century stone structures located to the west of the main house. The core of the complex was built between 1800 and 1819, with later additions in 1857. Initially constructed as a terrace of farm labourers' cottages, the buildings have undergone considerable alteration since their original construction.
The main range is a single-storey structure with roofs of Bangor blue slates laid in regular courses, incorporating a modern rooflight and corrugated plastic rooflights to two sections. The walls are of basalt rubble, still visible beneath areas of original harling and later roughcast render. The southernmost cottage features modern rectangular timber fixed lights with top-hung vents to the elevations and square recessed openings to the gable. Other windows are rectangular timber small-paned fixed lights, replacements for earlier windows. Rectangular ledged timber doors are typical, except for a modern glazed flush timber door to the southernmost cottage. The buildings have PVC gutters and downpipes.
A detached single-storey range of slated stone sheds stands to the west of the cottages, with red brick dressings around the openings. This section has been partially modernised with corrugated perspex roofing and rectangular small-paned doors. The east gable of this shed contains a stone inscribed “DB 1739”, referencing David Beck, the farm’s first known owner.
The wider Moat House itself is a two-storey rendered building with a concrete tiled roof and modern finishes. The outbuildings are situated in a rural setting, within a grassy garden bordered by mature trees, and include a horse walk. The horse walk consists of a cast iron wheel with a long angled iron armature, slightly sunk into the garden immediately east of the cottages.
