Description
This is a largely 19th-century gate lodge situated on the 1½-story, 3-bay rubble stone structure. The main entrance faces west. The west elevation features a hipped roof covered with later concrete tiles, a ridge chimney constructed of concrete brickwork, overhanging eaves with a black-painted timber soffit, and PVC rainwater goods. The walls are of basalt rubble with a smooth rendered plinth, and brick dressings to the openings, now painted black. Windows are rectangular timber sliding sash windows with horns, with the window to the right of the main entrance being coupled; flat arches are above the windows. A segmental arched central door contains a tongued and grooved sheeted door of herringbone pattern with a plain fanlight above.
The north gable displays two different qualities of masonry, indicating a later raising of the height, and has overhanging verges with shaped and perforated timber brackets. A semi-circular arched window is located in the gable apex, featuring a sashed 4 over 4 design with horns. The rear elevation includes a central 2-story gabled rear return projecting from it. A modern rectangular timber fixed light with a top-hung vent is located to the right of the rear return. The rear return has smooth cement-rendered walls, with a modern timber window in each floor of the gable; these are rectangular fixed lights with top vents on the ground floor, and casements above. A modern rectangular flush timber door is located on the south side of the return. The south gable is similar to the north gable.
The lodge stands side-on to the main road, facing onto the driveway to the rear of the Loughanmore outbuildings, and is set back slightly behind the front boundary wall. The boundary wall is constructed of basalt rubble with rough basalt rock copings. The driveway is entered by a gateway comprised of a pair of large square piers of basalt rubble with roughly formed basalt rubble caps, flanked each side by a pair of smaller square piers, all recessed back from the front boundary wall by curving screen walls, terminating in square end piers. Plain wrought iron gates, both for carriages and pedestrians, are present. The lodge and gateway are surrounded by mature trees.
The precise date of building is unknown, but a lodge is shown in this location on an Ordnance Survey map of 1832. It was later altered, raised in height, and given hipped gables, probably in the 1860s, coinciding with the remodelling of the Loughanmore outbuildings.
