Lawther National School, 74 Dunadry Road, Dunadry, Antrim, Co Antrim

The Lawther National School is a single-storey building dating from 1912, likely designed by Belfast architect Edwin Kennedy. It was constructed as a school and is reputedly built to his designs. The building is finished in cream-painted render with wet dashing and has a slated, gabled roof. The main entrance faces north and features sprocketed eaves, cast iron rainwater goods, and rectangular timber windows. Some original small-paned fixed windows remain, but others have been replaced with timber or PVC units. There are rectangular timber sheeted or modern flush timber doors set in plain reveals. An inscribed datestone is present on the entrance front. The building is set back slightly from the main road within its own grounds, with tarmac areas surrounding it and several trees to the front. A roughly coursed basalt retaining wall with modern iron railings constitutes the front boundary, along with similar entrance piers and original looped iron gates. To the rear is an extensive tarmac playground bounded by basalt rubble walls, with a small basalt rubble toilet block featuring sheeted timber doors and a modern corrugated iron roof. The school closed around 1996 and is currently in private ownership.
