Description

This is an early Victorian church built between 1840 and 1859, constructed in a plain Gothic Revival style. It originally served as a Presbyterian meeting house and stands facing the main road, set back within a large tarmac area. The church is rectangular, with a gabled form, four bays wide, and includes a projecting gabled entrance bay on the north gable. A modern hall extends to the rear from the south gable. The roof is covered in Bangor blue slates laid in regular courses, with an oversailing design at the front and rear, supported by shaped corbels at the front. Timber bargeboards are present. The walls are smooth cement rendered, lined and blocked, with rusticated quoins to the corners. Windows are Gothic arched and have latticed panes within chamfered reveals, topped by label mouldings. The main entrance, facing north, features modern rectangular timber doors set in a rectangular opening with a label moulding on curved consoles. Above the doorway is a datestone, and above that, a triplet of graded Gothic lancet windows filled with small tinted lozenge panes, finished with drip mouldings featuring large floreated stops. Rainwater goods are of cast iron and PVC. The rear hall is rendered with a wet dash of crushed black stones and has a slated roof. Its windows are rectangular fixed lights with top-hung vents on the east side and pointed form windows on the west side. The front boundary is marked by a modern rustic brick wall with concrete copings. A modern manse is detached to the south within the grounds. Later additions to the rear have resulted in the loss of some original exterior and interior features and character.
