Description
This terrace of houses and cottages was originally established in the early 19th century, likely between 1820 and 1839, but has undergone extensive remodelling throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Numbers 2 and 4 were built in 1931, while the precise dates of numbers 6 to 16 are not recorded.
The terrace features a mix of one and two-storey buildings with slated roofs and rendered walls, although the walling materials and window types vary considerably between individual properties. Number 2 has pebble-dashed walls with smooth rendered dressings, timber fixed light windows with top-hung vents, a glazed and panelled door, and boarded garage doors. Number 4 possesses pebble-dashed walls with smooth rendered dressings, modern rectangular timber fixed light windows with opening casements, and a modern glazed and panelled door. Number 6 exhibits similar walling to number 4, but with rectangular timber sliding sash windows, with 1 over 1 panes and horns, and a rectangular timber panelled door set within a decorative rendered pediment. Number 8 has roughcast walls with smooth rendered dressings, rectangular timber fixed light windows with top-hung vents, and a modern glazed and panelled door. Number 10 displays roughcast walls, with rectangular timber sliding sash windows (1 over 1) in smooth rendered reveals, and a rectangular timber panelled door. Number 12 is characterized by roughcast walls and modern timber fixed lights with top-hung vents, alongside a panelled timber door. Number 14 has similar roughcast walling to number 12, with timber sashed windows (1 over 1) lacking horns, and a glazed and panelled timber door. Finally, number 16 has wet dash rendered walls with smooth rendered dressings. It has timber sliding sash windows (1 over 1) with horns, including a first-floor window set within a timber-sheeted gabled half-dormer, and a glazed and panelled timber door. The south-facing elevation of number 16 mirrors the front elevation in appearance. Rainwater goods are generally cast iron, with numbers 2 and 16 having PVC gutters. The rear elevations incorporate both flat roofs and gabled returns.
A portion of the terrace is visible on an Ordnance Survey map of 1832, although the precise extent is indeterminate. An image from 1908 displays the southern end of the terrace as single-storey thatched cottages. While the overall terrace may date back to the early 19th century, individual houses have been successively raised a storey, remodelled, and re-roofed over time. The buildings stand facing the road with their backs along the riverside. They lie within a conservation area.
