Description
This is a three-storey, one-bay house, originally probably dating from the early 19th century, located within a terrace on High Street, Antrim. Despite alterations to both the exterior and interior, it retains architectural and historic interest and contributes to the group value of the surrounding buildings.
The main entrance, and the north-facing elevation, present a gabled facade with a pitched roof covered in regular courses of Bangor blue slates. A red brick chimney has been rebuilt on the left-hand gable. The walling is smooth, rendered, and painted. The windows are rectangular timber sliding sash windows with 8 panes in the upper sashes and 8 in the lower, lacking horns, and featuring exposed sash boxes set in plain reveals. One window is present on each upper floor. The ground floor is also smooth, rendered and lined, incorporating a projecting plinth and a large, rectangular shop window with plate glass, fixed upper lights, and top-hung vents; a concrete cill is present. To the right of the window is a doorway with a rectangular, panelled timber door set in a moulded timber surround, approached by three steps—the two lower steps are of stone. Plain iron railings flank the steps. Timber pilasters with finely detailed ornamentation, surmounted by a modern timber frieze displaying the shop name, are positioned at each extremity of the shop front and doorway. Shaped brackets are above the pilasters, and a moulded cornice runs along the top.
The rear elevation is four-storeys, two-bay, with twin gables. The walling is wet dash rendering with smooth cement-rendered reveals and openings. Modern PVC pipework is visible. Windows are modern rectangular timber fixed lights with top-hung vents. An iron fire escape stairway leads to a modern, flush timber door. A rectangular, timber ledged door is set in a plain frame at ground level, with a modern metal handle. The rear yard is concreted and enclosed by the rear returns of adjacent buildings.
A building is shown on this site on an Ordnance Survey map of 1832, although the precise construction date is uncertain, likely falling between 1820 and 1839. The building stands within a terrace facing the main street and is located within a conservation area. It is currently used as offices.
