Description

Second Donegore Presbyterian Church stands on an elevated site in rural countryside near Ballyclare, facing the Connor Road but set well back from it at the end of a driveway that terminates in a tarmac carpark. The church is an early 20th-century building of plain Gothic revival style, constructed sometime after 1902 during the ministry of Reverend D.H. Craig, who served from 1891 to 1941.

The building is rectangular in plan with rendered walls finished in dry dash render using white limestone chippings, and slated gabled roofs of Bangor blue slates laid in regular courses. Moulded cast iron gutters and cast iron downpipes run to the side elevations. The smooth rendered platbands and window surrounds are of reinforced cement.

The east elevation is symmetrical and faces the main road. A slightly projecting gabled porch marks the central entrance, which sits below a large four-light window occupying the main gable. The entrance bay is marked by two-stage buttresses, with a single lancet window to each side; smaller buttresses sit at the extremities of the gable. All windows feature decorative leaded glazing with simple Art Nouveau details to top and bottom, set in Gothic arched cement rendered surrounds with projecting concrete cills and protective storm glazing.

The side elevations each contain five single Gothic lancet windows divided by buttresses. The west gable is finished in smooth cement render, lined and blocked, with oversailing eaves and timber barge boards. A yellow brick chimney rises to the apex. Below this sits a short gabled projection with the same rendered walling and oversailing eaves, containing three lancets of small leaded panes. A lean-to open shelter occupies the right-hand corner with steps down to a basement, while the left-hand side has a small window and Gothic doorway.

The present church replaced an original 1788 building, which had been described in the Ordnance Survey Memoirs of the 1830s as "a plain stone building … 56 feet long and 28 broad" and was known as the Seceding Meeting House. The original building was repaired in 1830. Its replacement (the 1963 church hall) now stands immediately to the north.

To the north of the present church stands Dunamuggy Primary School, a small plain single-storey gabled building with rendered walls, slated roofs, and sashed windows (two over two with horns), constructed sometime before 1857 as Dunamuggy National School. It retains cast iron rainwater goods. Beyond this is the 1963 church hall with inscriptions in its recessed porch reading "Original building, 1788" and "Rebuilt 1963". A later rendered gabled hall lies further to the west, and a modern prefabricated temporary building stands to the east. A graveyard containing 19th and 20th-century memorials lies to the west of the church.
