Description

A greystone memorial slab standing upright in the ground, now slightly leaning forward. It is carved with a pair of engaged Tuscan colonnettes which carry a scrolled open pediment. Some of the moulded stonework is missing. Incised inscription to front, which appears to read as follows – "Here Lieth the body of Felmy Henry. Departed the 7th of Septr. 1738 aged 70 years. Also his wife Meabel departed the 9 July 1760 aged 72 years." The rear face is plain. SETTING: It stands in the old graveyard of Cranfield, on the south side of the ruinous 13th century church about approximately its own width out from the wall of the church and two-thirds the length of the church along from the west end. The graveyard contains a number of memorials of 18th, 19th and 20th century date. The entrance to the graveyard is by a modern steel barred gate with steel posts set between two large boulders on end which abut the stone revetments surrounding the graveyard; revetments surmounted by a hedge on the inside.
