Description

The Priory is a house dating from the 16th century, which was remodeled in the mid-19th century. It is constructed from limestone rubble with painted ashlar gables and features a slate roof, including a central brick stack and a rendered stack to the left, which is shared with The Manor on Hamp Street. Originally, the building had a two-unit through-passage plan with side wings, but it has since been altered to a double-depth plan. The house is two stories high and has a two-window range.

The left wing was demolished and rebuilt around 1840, becoming a separate dwelling known as The Manor. The right wing was demolished in the mid-20th century, and its right return is now brick with 20th-century windows. To the right of the house, there is a gabled porch with shouldered Ham Hill stone coping and the base of a finial above a shield in a square recess. The porch has double 20th-century doors set in a Tudor-arched opening.

The mid-19th century features include leaded three-light casement windows, located at the eaves level to the right of center and in a half dormer to the left of center. Similar windows on the ground floor are covered by a 20th-century conservatory. Inside, the building was remodeled and reroofed in the mid-19th century when the left wing was built. A very thick wall at the rear of the front rooms indicates the back of the former structure, and an arch similar to that of the porch is located opposite the front door at the rear of the former through passage. Tall 19th-century Tudor arches, which are now blocked, led into the former west wing.
