Description
The gatehouse and wall linking the gatehouse to the manor on the southeast side of Cothay Manor is a late 15th-century structure that underwent extensive restoration between 1926 and 1927. It is built from red sandstone random rubble and features a steeply pitched plain tile roof on the right side, alongside a flat lead roofed tower. The plan includes a square tower gateway with a hexagonal projecting stair turret, originally flanked by two symmetrical wings, of which only the right one remains.
The building is two storeys high with a 1:2 bay arrangement. The tower is crenellated and has set back buttresses. On the first floor, there is a three-light window with a Tudor arch head and a string course that acts as a hood mould. The entrance features a moulded depressed arch with a hood mould above it. Above the entrance is a reset square panel displaying the arms of Richard Bluett and his wife Alice Verney, the builder of Cothay. To the right, there are two two-light Tudor arch head windows with hood moulds on the first floor, and below them are two square lancets with chamfered surrounds and relieving arches. The facade is supported by two stepped buttresses, which continue to the returns.
Inside, there is a stone newel stair and a chamfered lintel above the first-floor fireplace, with an arched niche below in the wing that is no longer ceiled. The roof was rebuilt during the restoration in 1926-7. The wall, also made of red sandstone random rubble with stone slate coping, is approximately 2 meters high and has a dog leg plan, linking the gatehouse to the manor.
