Description

The buildings at 27 and 28 Vicarage Street date primarily from the 18th century, although they likely incorporate earlier structures. They are two-storey buildings of rubble construction, with four bays, featuring timber lintels above the windows and glazing bar sash windows. The right-hand section of the first floor has casement windows, originally beneath eaves windows with visible glazing bars from the interior. The ground floor has an irregular arrangement of openings, with a door positioned between the two leftmost windows. A segmental relieving arch, built forward of the entrance, originally led to the old Bailiffs House and incorporates a segmental archway with drips, likely dating from the early 16th century. A plain 19th-century shop front is present on the right-hand side. The attic is lit by dormers. The rear elevation shows a small gable above the right-hand first-floor window. Inside No. 28, a bolection fireplace is found in a first-floor rear extension room, and a similar fireplace with a Tudor rose keystone is in the front ground-floor room. The roof was originally gable-ended, facing the street, but was later extended to a rear gabled wing. This wing is partly timber-framed.
