Description

Ashton Farmhouse is an early 19th-century farmhouse, situated in Chapel Allerton. It is constructed of rendered and scribed walls that appear as ashlar, with end pilasters and a slate roof with coped verges. Brick stacks are present. The symmetrical design features two storeys and three bays, with 16-light sash windows in plain stone surrounds, each with stepped voussoirs above the heads and glazing bars. The central entrance has a six-panelled door with a transomlight containing glazing bars, and is sheltered by a portico with a flat wooden entablature, cornice, triglyph frieze, and two circular wooden columns, flanked by pilasters. A two-storey outshut of lower height is attached to the right, which may represent an earlier house. Internally, features from the same period are present. A room on the right-hand ground floor contains a broad fireplace surround incorporating two cupboards, along with a further wall cupboard. The staircase has a moulded handrail and a turned newel post, and window shutters are fitted to the front ground floor rooms.
