Description
St. Algars Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates back to the 14th century, with further alterations made in the 17th century and additional work in the 19th century. The building is constructed of random rubble with dressed quoins and features tile roofs, along with two rendered stacks, one made of brick. The irregular frontage is topped by three gables of varying heights. The farmhouse has two storeys and attics, with a layout of three bays. The first two bays on the left have 2 and 3-light hollow-moulded stone-mullioned windows, while the right bay features 9-pane sash windows in plain stone surrounds. There is a door opening to the left in a bead-moulded stone surround, which contains a four-panelled door with the top two panels glazed, and a pent-roofed rubble porch.
To the left, there is a former chapel of a monastic settlement, which has a 2-light 20th-century stone-mullioned window with leaded lights, and the remainder of a much larger opening that is now blocked. The chapel retains much of its original 14th-century arch-braced collar beam roof, and there is a squint visible in its north wall. Additionally, early timberwork can be seen in the barn located 2 meters to the rear of the farmhouse.
