Description
The terrace on the south side of Brympton House is a raised structure dating from the mid-19th century. It is constructed from Ham stone and extends approximately 75 meters from the southeast corner of the Chantry House across the south elevation of Brympton House to the Summerhouse. The terrace features an ashlar retaining wall with a chamfered plinth, topped with a stone balustrade that mimics the attic balustrading of the house. This balustrade includes intermediate piers that support a variety of urns and ornaments. In the center of the long western section, there is a block sundial with a ball finial, inscribed with "LAT 50-56, 17.30," and featuring sheet metal gnomons, two of which are broken. The central stair consists of nine straight steps, flanked by matching side balustrading, while secondary stairs at each end run parallel to the terrace and have solid balustrading with scroll decorations. The walkway is surfaced with gravel. This terrace replaced a simpler version with only a central stair, as illustrated by Kip around 1700, and was installed by Lady Georgina Fane, who managed the estate from 1857 to 1875.
