Description

The walls enclosing the west forecourt to Brympton House, likely built in the mid-19th century, are constructed from ham stone, primarily in ashlar. The south side of the wall may date back to the 17th century and stands about 1.5 meters high, featuring moulded coping. This section extends from the Chantry House and includes a small gateway to the church, a plain opening, and urns placed at intervals along the wall. The west wall is approximately one meter high, with a chamfered plinth and angled copings, topped with a balustrade that matches the attic balustrade on the south front of Brympton House. In the center, there are a pair of square gatepiers with rusticated shafts, cornice caps, and urn finials, flanking a pair of early 20th-century wrought and cast-iron gates with curved toprails.

The north side mirrors the south side but is slightly taller due to the slope. It features a central gateway with plain piers and urn finials, flanked by return walls that lead to shallow steps and end piers with urn finials. There is a swept section against the Clock Tower and another gateway with ball finials at the piers near the house. A small extension off the south-west corner includes a sweep and a plain gateway into the churchyard. The walls enclose an area of approximately 70 meters by 30 meters, widening to 40 meters, and are a significant feature in the setting of the entrance front of Brympton House. The south wall may be the one illustrated by Kip around 1700, while the rest was likely constructed during the estate management of Lady Georgina Fane from 1857 to 1875.
