Description
Odwell Cottage is a farmhouse that has been divided into two dwellings. It dates from around 1500, or possibly earlier, and has been altered over time, including being refenestrated and extended at the rear in the 20th century. The exterior features a slobbered rubble facade that may be facing cob, with asbestos slate roofs and boxed eaves. There is a large roughcast stack on the right gable end and a brick stack, rebuilt in the 20th century, located between the first and second bays on the left.
The building has a plan that is not fully clear without a complete internal inspection, but it appears to consist of three cells with an enlarged one bay to the east, including a lateral stair and additions at the rear. It stands two storeys high with an irregular arrangement of windows across 1:2:1 bays, featuring late 19th and 20th-century wood and metal casements. The ground floor has two segmental-headed window openings, one to the left of the entrance and one to the right, along with a plank door. The end bay is unlit, and it is possible that the entrance has been moved from the second bay on the left.
The interior, which has been partially observed, includes a hall with a moulded six-panel compartment ceiling and winder stairs set against the rear wall. There is a plank and muntin screen dividing the inner room, which has been partially restored with painted figures from the early 16th century on both the planks and muntins, although no doorway between the two rooms is evident. The winder stairs have a depressed Tudor arch head and are set against the rear wall of the inner room. A chamfered bressumer is present over the fireplace, and a wooden pier supports the empty bay to the left of the fireplace. Additionally, there is a 16th to 17th-century stair rising against the facade wall in the room beyond. Overall, Odwell Cottage is a very interesting house that warrants a more detailed examination, as much of its character is concealed behind a plain 20th-century facade.
