Description

A farmhouse, now divided into two dwellings, dating from the late 15th to early 16th century, with alterations made in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by Samson and Cottan of Taunton. The building is constructed of red sandstone rubble, with a roughcast front and right return. The roof is covered in concrete double Roman tiles with overhanging eaves, a slight bell-cast, and sprockets. Brick stacks are positioned between the first and second bays, left and right of centre.

The original plan comprised a four-cell layout with a cross passage and a cross wing to the right. The exterior has a frontage of four bays, with the second bay slightly recessed. The windows are mostly C19 casements, including a 2-light casement below the eaves on the left, 4 and 2-light gabled dormers in the centre, a 3-light window in the right gable end, and a ground floor bay on the left which is unlit. There are 3-light casements flanking the original entrance, and a 2-light casement in the right gable end. A second entrance is located in the re-entrant angle, with plank doors.

Inside the right-hand dwelling, a plank and muntin screen remains, dividing the cross wing laterally, along with traces of painted decoration depicting three female figures. A 7-panel compartment ceiling with remains of painted decoration is also present in the centre right. A chamfered lintel is found above the cross passage fireplace. A winder stair has a newel post at the junction with the cross wing. The bases of two pairs of jointed crucks are visible in the cross wing, alongside three small plasterwork panels depicting a lion and two Tudor roses in a bedroom.
