Description
The Charltons' War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1930, with additional inscriptions added after the Second World War and in the early 21st century. It is constructed of coursed blue lias stone.
The memorial is set within a roughly triangular area enclosed by boundary walls, featuring a rectangular memorial wall. It has a two-stepped base topped by a slightly tapering monolith. The front (south) face of the monolith displays several inscribed stone plaques. The central plaque bears the inscription '1914/ 1918', with a brass lantern positioned in front of it. To the left, there is a plaque listing the names of men from Charlton Mackrell who lost their lives in the First World War, while to the right is a plaque for those from Charlton Adam. The lower section of the wall includes a central tablet inscribed with '1939-1945/ (NAMES)'.
The remembrance garden is bordered on the west, east, and south sides by coursed stone walls with stone coping. The entrance on the south side features low metal gates set between tall, square stone piers, each adorned with a stone crucifix in relief on the south face.
