Description

The Gillingham Monument is a mid-19th century granite obelisk located approximately 30 metres west of the Cemetery Mortuary Chapels in Chard. It features inscriptions that commemorate the Gillingham family, particularly James Gillingham, who lived from 1840 to 1924. James was a shoemaker who gained international recognition for his groundbreaking advancements in artificial limb technology, which he began developing in 1863.
