Description
This is a detached cottage located 50 meters west of Lower Stout Farmhouse, dating from around 1800 or earlier. It is constructed from local lias stone that is roughly cut and squared, and features a thatched roof with plain gables. The cottage has brick end chimney stacks with traditional baffles. It is a single-storey building with an attic and consists of two bays, along with a one-bay 20th-century addition to the east. The windows are casement style in plain openings, which have roughly voussoired flat arches. There is a boarded door between the bays that matches the openings. The extension is rendered and has a clay pantiled roof with a casement window in the east gable. Although the interior has not been seen, it is noted to have a wide fireplace at the west gable under a chamfered beam, with a ladder stair leading to the loft alongside. This cottage is a rare survival, remaining practically unaltered, representing a late version of the simple two-room house with an attic.
