Description

Taunton and Somerset Hospital, located on East Reach, was founded in 1809, with the first part of the building completed in 1812. The side wings were added between 1870 and 1873. The main front has been considerably altered. The hospital features a four-storey central block made of brown brick, with string courses and hipped slate roofs that have projecting eaves supported by wooden brackets. The central block includes five windows, with the centre bay projecting forward. There is a large ashlar porch at the upper ground floor, which is accessed by two flights of entrance steps with railings. The side pavilions are three storeys high and have three-light sash windows with pilaster detailing.
