Description

Ramus House, built around 1840, is a house located on East Street in Crewkerne. It is constructed from Ham Hill stone ashlar and features a hipped slate roof with stone stacks. The building has a T-shaped plan, with a substantial wing that steps forward to the left and a large 20th-century extension at the rear.

The house is two storeys high and has a symmetrical four-window arrangement on the main block. The eaves are wide and supported by brackets, while the quoins facing the street are rusticated, with a platband at the cill level. The windows are 6/6-pane sashes, with the two central ones set in a stepped-forward gabled bay that has an open pediment at the eaves. To the right, there is a four-panel door topped by two square panels and sheltered by a narrow hood on consoles. The left wing has a symmetrical two-window range with flat gauged arches over two 8/8-pane sashes on the ground floor, flanking a doorcase featuring incised pilasters and a moulded cornice, although the original door has been replaced with a 20th-century horned 6/6-pane sash. The first-floor windows at eaves level are also from the 20th century. At the rear, the main building has four French windows with margin panes leading to the garden, with 6/6-pane sashes above and incised key-patterns on the pilasters. An extensive 20th-century wing is located to the rear-left.

The property is enclosed by a high ashlar wall that creates a forecourt to the right. A stone plinth curves forward and connects to the north-west corner of the left wing, supporting spearhead railings and square, cast-iron gate piers with trellises and ball finials. The interior has not been inspected.
