Description

The Recess is an 18th-century house constructed of red sandstone random rubble with a slate roof and brick stacks on both the right and left sides. It stands two storeys tall and features three bays. The windows are 16-pane sash windows, with a 12-pane sash window positioned above the central doorway. All windows have early 19th-century blind boxes, and the keystones of the voussoirs are painted. The entrance is framed by a pedimented pilaster doorcase that contains a six-panel door. The Recess Lodge to the left and part of Quaker Lodge to the right serve as wings to this appealing example of 18th-century infill.
