Description
The Church of St Edward is an Anglican parish church with origins dating back to the 15th century, which was rebuilt in 1889 by Henry Edwards of Bristol. The church is constructed of rubble with slate roofs, featuring coped verges with cruciform finials and a gabled west bellcote. Its layout includes a nave, south porch, north aisle, north porch and vestry, a north transept, and a chancel. The architectural style is Neo-Perpendicular, with some remaining Perpendicular features.
The nave has four bays and is adorned with 2-light windows, while the west end features a 3-light window. The gabled porch includes a large 18th-century memorial slab set into the east side, and the inner door is medieval, ribbed and studded, with elaborate iron hinges. The north aisle has four bays, an embattled parapet, and 2-light windows, along with a lean-to north porch. The single bay transept leads to a two-bay chancel, which has two 2-light windows on the south side and a 3-light window on the east, along with another large 18th-century memorial slab inset to the east.
Inside, the church has plastered walls and a tile floor, with wagon and lean-to roofs. The aisle features a plain four-bay arcade, and there is a medieval chancel arch and font. Notable furnishings include a Jacobean chest, an 18th-century chest, and various 19th-century fittings such as pews, choir stalls, an organ, altar rails, and a reredos. The church also houses six 18th-century wall monuments and three early 19th-century wall monuments, along with simple stained glass and an 18th/early 19th-century painting of the Virgin and Child. The roof retains remnants of a carved medieval wall-plate.
